a love story

i love shoes
i recently discovered a reason for said penchant.

did you know that my existence is completely due to a pair of shoes? a certain pair of shoes: pink keds to be exact.

once upon a time H. Ray Hart was attending the university of utah. he was voted Mr. Utah or something of the sort by his fellow student body, a.k.a. (and i'll try to keep this as humble as possible) my grandpa was voted the most attractive, intelligent, amazing, all around dateable guy at the U. what a feat. he was also a member of a certain fraternity: Sigma Chi

Joanne Garff was a sorority queen, she was popular, beautiful and also just happened to be the sweetheart of a certain fraternity: Sigma Chi

it was almost inevitable that the two would become a pair, and date they did. though Ray was preparing to head off on a two year mission to Paris, France, he had one last chance to take Jo to a grand ball. one night at a party he asked to drive her home, to which she responded that she had come with her friends and would leave with her friends. with plans to ask her to the dance, he asked her again to let him be the one to take her home, and again she said no. a frustrated Ray excused himself from the party, went upstairs, invited another girl, and that was the end of that. he left for Paris, France, received two letters from Jo in the first month and didn't hear a word after that...

after returning home two and a half years later a more grown up and mature Ray ran into a still beautiful and popular Jo. She was wearing the cutest pink outfit he'd ever seen, everything about her matched perfectly, except for her old, beat up white tennies. Lets just say the tennies didn't stop his heart from immediately rekindling the feelings he once had for Jo, and he decided he'd do everything he could to win her back.

they went on a few dates, but she informed him that she had some pretty serious correspondence with a missionary in germany that she was not ready to give up. unsure of what to do, Ray went off on a trip for business, and while on his trip he found himself face to face with a certain perfect gift for Jo: a pair of pink keds.

they were bought, wrapped and shipped immediately

the very same day Jo received the mysterious package from Ray, she also received a package from germany, and as family tradition would have it, both packages sat side by side at the family dinner table, almost ominously waiting to be opened as soon as the meal was done. finally, the packages were opened: the first, pink keds, brought a smile to Jo's face, she realized immediately that they would match her favorite outfit to the tee. the second, an expensive antique german bible, seemed far superior to the keds, in worth, expense, and meaning, but the smile quickly became a look of confusion. who would she choose? she would have to make the decision, and there could not be a better time. was it to be the less expensive, but fun gift, or the pricey, valuable gift?

thank heavens her father decided to chime in
"I know who I'd choose!"
he informed her that he would pick Ray. He went on to explain that though the keds were of much less worth they showed that Ray was truly thinking of Joanne when he bought the gift, while bible boy was only think of himself. what worth could an ancient german bible have for Joanne? Though perhaps it contained more meaning, it was a certain pair of shoes that proved more meaningful: pink keds, to be exact.

so the bible was sent back, the perfect matching outfit was born and the rest is history.

and here i am today, all because of a pair of pink keds.
shoes!
is that why i love em so much?
